What is Reiki?
When you Google this question, there are about 48.5 million search returns. Pretty intimidating number to look at before writing a post titled “What is Reiki.”
So, instead of retelling stories that have been told beautifully by others millions of times, I am going to share my experience and understanding of Reiki.
What Reiki Is and Is Not
Let’s start with a little clarification surrounding a common misconception. Reiki is spiritual energy but is not a religion.
Spirituality is your connection with a power greater than yourself, whether you call it God, spirit, universe, higher power, etc.
Religions offer guidance on how to connect to the divine through scriptures, guidelines, and places of worship.
You can have a spiritual connection without being part of a religion, and you can be part of a religious community without having a spiritual connection.
Reiki offers an opportunity for spiritual growth no matter your religious background. Through Reiki practice, you connect to your higher source and channel energy from that source.
How Reiki Works
Reiki is the universal life-force energy that flows within us and connects us to all living beings. You may have experienced glimmers of this energy when you are sharing an emotional experience with a group.
Think about cheering on your favorite team in the stands with other fans. Imagine your voice joining others lifted in song. Recall the collective grief felt when saying goodbye to a loved one.
In these types of situations, you feel an unexplained connection with others. Like you are all one. This is the energy I am describing.
After study with a Reiki master and becoming attuned to this spiritual energy, a Reiki practitioner is able to channel it from its source to themselves, other people, animals, and even inanimate objects. This energy-healing system focuses on whole-body energetic balance.
The body’s energy is the soil from which our physical, emotional, and spiritual health grows. If this soil is not tended, it becomes depleted. Like when we try to grow crops in poor soil, our health becomes stunted when we have poor energetic soil.
Reiki does not alone cure disease or heal injuries and is not a replacement for medical treatments. However, Reiki replenishes our energetic balance and provides an environment where our health can grow. This enhanced health may even prevent chronic, stress-related illnesses from developing.
Since energy transcends time and space, Reiki does not require hands-on treatments. I have found distance treatments to be a powerful way to send and receive Reiki.
